Prehabilitation: How to Prepare Your Body Before Surgery

What is prehabilitation?

Prehabilitation — or 'prehab' — is the physiotherapy you do before an operation to get your body as strong and ready as possible. It is the mirror image of rehabilitation, and for planned surgery such as a hip or knee replacement, it can make a real difference to your recovery.

The principle is simple: the fitter, stronger and more prepared you are going into surgery, the better placed you are to recover well afterwards.

Why it helps

Surgery and the rest that follows can quickly reduce strength and fitness. Building a buffer beforehand means you have more to draw on during recovery, and often regain your independence sooner.

Prehab also gives you a head start on the exercises you will need afterwards, so they are already familiar when it counts.

What prehab involves

A prehab program is tailored to you and your planned surgery. It typically includes strengthening the muscles around the affected joint, general conditioning, and practising the movements and techniques you will use during recovery — such as using a walking aid or getting in and out of bed safely.

It is also a chance to prepare your home and plan ahead, so everything is set up for a smooth return.

Preparing your home and mind

Simple changes — a firm chair, a clear path to the bathroom, items within easy reach — make the early recovery days much easier. Knowing what to expect also reduces anxiety, which itself supports a better recovery.

A physiotherapist can help you plan all of this in advance, so nothing is left to the last minute.

How home physiotherapy helps

Home visit prehab is convenient and practical — your physiotherapist can prepare you and your home at the same time, in the environment you will actually recover in. It is especially valuable if travelling is already difficult before surgery.
